About us
We are the Scaife family, based in the historic spa town of Ilkley, in the heart of Yorkshire, in northern England. Ilkley is set within the Wharfedale valley and the Scaife family have lived in Wharfedale for over 500 years.
The Original Yorkshire Clothing Company Limited (TOYCCL) was borne out of our family's passion for using natural resources and supporting rural communities. We manufacture quality flat caps and other wool products using 100% woollen fabrics, woven in the Historic County of Yorkshire. We are proud to say that all our products are made in England.
We utilise new ideas and small quantities of specialist fabrics whilst ensuring traditional skills are used to produce our unique range of caps. We work closely with the British Wool Marketing Board and The Campaign for Wool (Patron: HM King Charles III) and we are members of the British Sheep Association.
On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at
In Ilkley, we have a famous song about a man who didn’t wear a hat and came to an untimely demise! "On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at" (On Ilkley Moor without a hat) is a folk song sung in the Yorkshire dialect. It is considered the unofficial anthem of Yorkshire. The song tells of a lover courting Mary Jane on Ilkley Moor without a hat (baht 'at). The lack of headwear in the cold winds of Ilkley Moor lead to his death from exposure.
Don’t worry, it’s quite cheery really! However, to be on the safe side, you should always buy one of our flat caps to wear when you are on Ilkley Moor!
